The Dempster Highway
The Dempster Highway snakes across the tundra from Dawson City to
Inuvik. Due to permafrost (permanently frozen ground just under the
surface) the Dempster is elevated from the ground using gravel and
dirt. There are no trees at this high latitude. The ground is covered
with red and green lichen and in this picture the lichen is typically
one metre high and takes 75 years to grow to such a height. This
picture is north of the tree line in the Tombstone mountains which is
approximately 100 kilometres south of the Arctic circle. We found in
taking the photographs that the sky was much brighter than the ground.
