In Fall 2015, the ECE1813 course instructor is;
William E. Briggs <web@unb.ca>, Section 1A

Assignment 11 is up. The lab makeup day is Monday, Nov. 30th. Note that there will be extra help sessions on the following days and times:
Sun., Dec. 6th, 12:00 noon
Mon., Dec. 7th, 2:30 p.m.

Thurs., Dec. 10th, 1:00 p.m.
All sessions will be held in H-135 unless otherwise notified

This is the official web page for ECE1813 for the Fall 2015 term. You will find here links to information and documents you will need during the course, as well as links to optional - and useful - material.

Welcome to ECE1813 for the fall term. I hope you enjoy the course.

Important Note! The PDFs that I will put on the DesireToLearn site contain the solutions to the workbook problems have the latest versions from the publisher. They are the solutions for the companion workbook to the second edition of the text, but I have not checked all of the solutions, so I cannot vouch for the accuracy of all of the solutions. If you find your answer in conflict with an answer in the solution set, please come see me. I will check it and inform the class of any errors that are discovered.

Course Information Labs — New Links! Assignments Errata
Course Information — also called a Course Outline or Syllabus. You are provided with a paper copy of this. If you want answers to any questions regarding the course, consult this document first. If it's not answered in the Syllabus, then consult the long version, and if it's not there, ask the instructor.

Dispute over assignment marks

E-mail Protocol

Your lab groups will be printed on the attendance sheet that will be in the lab when you arrive on the first day. You will stay with that lab group for the rest of the term.

Links to the lab manuals will be sent to you by e-mail before the day of the lab. The labs will be posted here.

Lab 1
Lab 2
Lab 3
Lab 4
Lab 5
Lab 6
Lab 7
Lab 8
Lab 9

Because some edits and changes are made from time to time to improve the lab manual, the lab manual may be different from the one used in all previous versions of this course (including the most recent term), so if you have any older copy it must not be used. You should obtain your lab manual the day before the lab you are about to do so you are sure to have the most up-to-date version. You will be informed by e-mail when the new lab manual is available.

All assignments should use the cover sheet. You may download the Assignment Cover Sheet here.

Alert!    There may be assignment questions for which you will be required to use a computer programming language or a spreadsheet in order to find the solution. You should be at least moderately comfortable with some such computer tool.

At this time there have been only a couple of errors discovered in the new (second) edition of the text. I have them logged on paper and will update this section with the information when I get a chance.

At this time the state of the new edition of the companion workbook appears to be very good. I have discovered only one wrong answer among the solutions and will post that when I get a chance.

Four different errata sheets for the first edition of Knight have been located. I combined them into a single PDF file of errors.

If you find anything that you think is an error in the text or the workbook, please bring it to my attention. I'll check it and update this information as necessary.

E-mail addresses for your assignment markers and lab TAs/markers are shown below. Their initials are on the assignment/lab, so you can identify who marked it.

(Only the User ID portion is given to discourage automated address collection by spammers. Construct the mail address by adding @UNB.CA after the mail ID.)

The equation sheet for the ECE1813 final exam is available in PDF format. Minor adjustments may be made to this for the Fall 2014 exam, depending on how the course goes. But this is approximately what it will be. It allows you to sort out what you need to have in memory and what is provided. Equation sheets are also provided for the quizzes.

On-line Physics learning aids available from the text publisher. This learning aid is available now.

Here is a link to a good web site that has a lot of useful illustrations and interactive java applets that are very relevant to what we are doing in ECE1813. Some of them are among the best animations I've seen.

Some of it is definitely outside of the scope of the course, but a lot of it is directly relevant and the visuals may help you to understand the concepts.

You can view the relationship among the electric field and energy entities here.

If you thought electricity was boring and intangible, take a look here (just noticed that this link is dead - I'll investigate ) and you'll find out just how amazing it can be. Be sure to look at the entire page and watch the videos. I'll post more links as I discover them.

Here is a page of links to Tesla related material. I haven't had time to investigate it all, but you're sure to be intrigued if you do a bit of digging.

Course Text Book:    For this course we are going to insist that you buy the course text. The text is a Physics text covering electricity and magnetism. The applications portion of the course we will do from notes, not a text. There is also a workbook that is a companion to the Physics text, if you are interested to buy it. The Physics text is available at the bookstore. They will be available at the Bookstore sometime prior to the start of term. We recommend that you purchase the book as early as possible and begin reading it. We are going to assign — and assume you follow through on — suggested readings. The text book is:

Physics for Scientists & Engineers, 3rd Edition
by Randall Knight
Vol 4
ISBN: TBD
Publisher: Pearson

Note that this is the same text that is used for the first year Physics course. If you are doing both courses, it makes sense to buy the complete hard covered version of the text. If you are only taking the ECE course, you can buy the soft covered volume IV that covers the material in this course.

Resolution of Dispute over Assignment Marks

If you have an issue with the way an assignment has been marked, your first course of action is to take it up with the marker. If, after discussion with the marker, you are not satisfied with the result, then bring it to the course coordinator (W.E. Briggs).
